For many years, I rode a mountain bike that was purchased and never actually properly fit for me. This was my only bike so, when I started finding myself doing more road riding, I was also starting to do longer and longer rides. I also used the mountain bike on my VR trainer in the winter.
I found that my back and shoulders really started bothering me. I went to the doctor who sent me to physio and, being a cyclist himself, recommended I take the bike in for a proper fit.
I won't say it was night and day after the fitting, as I also learned that I needed to strengthen my core as well as being in properly fit. However, it did make a difference and I knew that I wasn't putting strain on parts that didn't need to be strained.
Since the first fitting, I have gone back for fitting adjustments now and then.
It's important to listen to your body and to get a proper fitting. Aches and pains on the bike are inevitable but they don't have to be damaging.
